The World Needs Us

The world needs us right now, more than any other time, which is why so many of us have chosen to incarnate at this time. We are the riotous, reckless and rebellious people who from time to time tilt the world on its axis a little bit. The planet needs that.

There are people who’ll accuse us of being mentally ill, or that we’re all part of some potentially dangerous cult.

Really?

Yes, we’re drunken, we’re disorderly, we’re impulsive and occasionally lawless, but without us, well, wouldn’t this planet be a boring place to live?

We have a talent for alienating ourselves from those I call Rag, Tag & Bobtail. The planet demands that of us because we’re the court jesters, the comedians, the flower children, the nomads and vagrants, the free spirits. Without us the world would be full of humans who are little more than robots,

Rag Tags, by the way, are those tedious and humdrum type of people most of us have to work with. I call them Rag, Tag & Bobtail because they’re really nothing but glove puppets. Their heads are little more than hollow wood and at times they seem to be controlled by strings and rods and levers with invisible hands inside them making them ‘perform.’ Most glove puppets have fixed facial expressions and a hinged mouth, giving them a dull, lifeless expression. That’s why I call people who’ll never appreciate you and me, Rag, Tag & Bobtail.

Look at it this way, there are those amongst us who are what you’d call dead-alive, and others who are alive-alive. The dead-alive work, eat, drink, speak, the same as you and I. Their purpose is to show exactly what happens if you don’t evolve. They make no mistakes, they never miscalculate (only machines never miscalculate) and they make only dead things. The alive-alive, however, are invariably in error, questioning the world we find ourselves in, always trying to remember.

And you know what our dilemma is? We’re too astute and too bold for the Rag Tags, and they fucking hate that. Our perception moves a million miles a minute, and we don’t just muddle through like most people. In fact, for the most part we don’t even like most people, and that may well have something to do with the fact that we’re not bamboozled by the things that bamboozle them. Our dilemma, you see, is that we’re too audacious, because we’re philosophers, always thinking about our existence and human stupidity.

‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has,’ said Margaret Mead about the Beat Poets, who between them sold a trillion pairs of Levis and a million espresso coffee machines, and sent countless kids on the road.

So, when you think about it, being too audacious is no dilemma at all, is it?

To completely misquote environmentalist, David W. Orr, the earth does not need more prosperous, wealthy and fortunate people with small minds. The earth desperately needs more medicine men and Shamans, more artists and musicians, more tattooed storytellers, more hardened waitresses and explosive affairs.

This is why we’re here. All of us. To make the world smile.

Cherish that.
